Partner Highlight: James River Association
Our partners at James River Association (JRA or James Riverkeeper) are committed to being a guardian of the James River. The James River is Virginia’s largest river, flowing across the entire state. The James is Virginia’s largest tributary to the Chesapeake Bay. It is 340 miles long and is fed by 25,000 miles of tributaries, which makes it one of the longest rivers in America that begins and ends in the same state.
The James River watershed encompasses approximately 10,000 square miles. It is home to one-third of all Virginians who live in its 39 counties and 19 cities and towns, and touches the lives of more Virginians than any other feature in the landscape. Residents of the watershed rely on the James for drinking water, commerce and recreation.
JRA provides a voice for the river and take action to promote conservation and responsible stewardship of its natural resources. With programs that stretch from education, community conservation, to watershed restoration, they are advocates for the James.
As they put it, “Clean Water is No Accident”
They have worked diligently over the past four decades to take the James from one of the nation’s most polluted rivers to one of the most improved. Work like this takes a village. Grab some gear and choose “VA - James River Association” as your water protecting partner to support their efforts. Or, check out their website thejamesriver.org to learn more!
