IT’S ART, RIGHT?

Climate controlled, bullet proof glass, and an armor plating made of high-resistance steel. At least that’s what a quick google search will tell you is what protects the ‘Mona Lisa.’ That may seem a bit extreme, but art can have some incredible impacts and benefits to people on a personal level. I’m not going to go into the influences on society or social statements of art, or anything really that deep. Let’s keep it simple. A beautiful piece of art makes you feel good. It’s actually know to even soothe anxiety, depression, and stress…let’s face it, that sounds like something most of us could use a little break from.

But, did you know that just looking at a body of water has been proven to do the same. Being around water just makes us feel better. Just like art, there is purpose found in these beautiful places. They speak to us, calm us, connect us; they wash over our anxiety and stress. There is something amazing about the waters of our blue world, it’s something that you can’t ignore. Incidentally, it cost about $25 to see the ‘Mona Lisa’ on display. A sunset over the ocean, a beautiful clear stream, or even the tranquility of little local pond…free!

I know I talk about my kiddos alot, but they are the reason I work in preserving these places for the future. Too many times I have heard the stories, from those who have spent their lives on the water, telling of how they use to catch more, or healthier fish; swimming holes that use to be pristine and beautiful, now covered with so much litter you wouldn’t dare to even walk barefoot; beautiful rivers that use to flow crystal clear, now cloudy and spotted with oily runoff. If that can happen with just one lifetime, what will happen in two or three lifetimes? Will these places be around for my grandchildren to view, not to mention the implications it would have on our overall physical health.

These places are vital and immensely important. They bring joy to so many people, these places give meaning, purpose, and memories. Let’s protect them as the art they are. Let’s work together and stand together to conserve their beauty for generations to come.
